Starting therapy can feel daunting. Whether you've been thinking about it for months or finally made the decision last week, it's completely normal to feel nervous before your first counselling session. At Hold Your Hand Counselling in Leicester, I want you to feel as comfortable and prepared as possible — so here's exactly what you can expect.
Before you arrive
Before your first session, I offer a free 30-minute consultation. This is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where we can get to know each other a little, talk about what's brought you to therapy, and explore whether working together feels like the right fit. There's no commitment required — it's simply a chance for you to ask questions and for me to understand what kind of support might help you most.
Our therapy room is located at 65C Bedford Street South, right in Leicester city centre — easily accessible by bus, tram or on foot, with parking nearby. It's a warm, private, comfortable space designed to help you feel at ease the moment you walk in.
What happens in the first session
The first session is different from what many people expect. It's not about jumping straight into deep, difficult conversations. Instead, it's really about getting to know you.
We'll talk about what's been going on for you, what you're hoping therapy might help with, and a little about your background. There's no script and no pressure to share more than you're ready to. Everything you share is completely confidential.
As a person-centred counsellor, my approach is built around you — your pace, your needs, your goals. I'm not here to tell you what to do or how to feel. I'm here to listen, without judgement, and to help you find your own way forward.
How will I feel afterwards?
People often feel a mixture of relief and tiredness after their first session — and that's completely normal. Talking about things that have been weighing on you takes energy, and it can feel emotional to finally have a space where you're truly heard.
Some people feel an immediate sense of clarity. Others need a few sessions before things start to shift. Both are completely valid — therapy is not a quick fix, and there's no "right" timeline.
You don't have to have it all figured out
One of the most common things I hear from new clients is "I don't even know where to start." That's okay. You don't need to have a neat summary of your life ready, or a clear idea of what you want to work on. Just turning up is enough.
Whether you're dealing with anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, trauma, or simply feeling like something isn't quite right — you deserve a space to talk about it.
